Format For Submitting Essays To The Writing Program
For each submission period, teachers collect at least one essay from each student, package the essays together with a copy of the student roster (to make sure the evaluators recognize student names and spell them correctly), and mail them to either the High School coordinator or the K-8 coordinator. The coordinators then mail the evaluated essays back to the teachers.
To assure accurate assessment, each essay should have the following information on it:
Student Name
Teacher (IST) Name
Date
Grade Level
Prompt Code

Frequently Asked Questions
Can students submit more than the three submissions a year?
Yes. You are welcome to submit up to once a month. Three is the required minimum.
Can students in K-2 submit?
Yes. Although not required to submit, students in grades K-2 are encouraged to send writing to the Writing Program.
Can students younger than fifth grade submit a Portfolio?
Yes. Although not required to submit a Portfolio, younger students are welcome to do so.
Can students submit essays directly to the Writing Program?
In some cases, students may submit directly to the Writing Program. However, we recommend and prefer that teachers collect students’ work and submit in batches.
Can students submit essays that are written to prompts outside of the Writing Program Prompts?
We encourage use of our established Writing Program prompts, but students can submit essays written to other prompts. In these cases, however, it is important that the prompt is included with the essay, so that we can accurately evaluate how the writing responds to the prompt.
Can essays be submitted electronically?
Yes. Students can submit essays electronically in Microsoft Word format with the e-submit form.
